FAQ / The Inspired Memoir Writer Group
Q. The Inspired Memoir Writer features two aspects. Why?
A. We felt that both functions—study and interaction—were crucial to helping people to develop as writers.
- The Memorable Story provides much grounding in the practice of writing. Many problems that new writers encounter are easily solved with more knowledge. After mastering The Memorable Story, you will be comfortable with many aspects of the theory of writing. No more confusion about direct and indirect dialog, no more hesitation about adding foreshadowing, a new comfort with depicting the people in your story.
- For its part, the group coaching is about support and answers. We feel we have created the best of both possibilities.
Q. Is the Inspired Memoir Writer a workshop?
A. No. While your coach (that’s what we’ll call your group leader) will head each session with a short didactic component that will orient the discussion and also pick up on elements that were introduced by writers in the previous session, the real content of the group is in its sharing of writing experience and in its discussion. In each session, the coach will find moments when instruction is useful. Concurrently, any of the writers may wish to share a bit of technique with the group. We all become teachers for each other. This is a strength of the process. It works well and distinguishes group coaching from a workshop and from, one-on-one coaching.
If you wanted to, you could call The Memorable Story (which is both written and audio) a private workshop. It is work done on your own, work you bring to the group sessions.
Q. Is The Inspired Memoir Writer like individual coaching?

A. While the Inspired Memoir Writer group inevitably contains many elements that make individual coaching so successful, its process is somewhat different. As a group learning experience, the Inspired Memoir Writer makes use of the group’s knowledge and wisdom. At the early stage most IMW writers find themselves in, they need to develop quantity. Quality will come, but there can be no revision without drafts. That is our focus: to develop your a working draft. This is something the Inspire Memoir Writer knows how to do—and will do for you.
A writing coach can help you at every step of the process. Having “been there and done that”—and being able to talk clearly about it, a memoir-writing coach can point you in the right direction and gently correct your course.
A coach is a teacher, a cheerleader, a critic, a motivator, a writing buddy, a person who holds you accountable for meeting your goals, a good listener, and sometimes an editor—and a coach can be more if you need more.

What most people call coaching is a one-on-one experience. It is an excellent choice, but it does not offer the group component. In groups, I have heard writers admit time after time, “I had not realized that I had a problem until someone brought it up in their discussion and I was able to realize I was doing the same thing!”
That said, the laser-focus of one-on-one coaching has its special appeal.
Q. So what to call The Inspired Memoir Writer?
A. Let’s call it a learning-to-write program. The Inspired Memoir Writer is both a tutorial that teaches the nuts and bolts of memoir writing and a vehicle for group interaction. Its thoughtful, dedicated writers bring their new-found knowledge from the tutorial to exchanges about how to improve individual memoirs. People come together for support and development. While there is an experienced writer/coach/teacher who is present as leader, the group functions as a collaborative whose magic occurs in the exchanges between everyone.
