November 14 Activity: Travel to the Setting of Your Memoir

November 14 Activity: Go where the action was—the setting of your memoir.

What you will do today is travel to the place that figures in your story. This is the setting of your memoir. If you can do so physically, that is great.

If however you need to travel to the setting of your memoir in your mind – because it is too far away or because somehow it no longer exists, you can always get there in your imagination.

If you can travel to the place

Spend time there lingering with your memories.

  • Remember the feel of being there once.
  • Remember things that happened.
  • Remember the people who shared the setting with you.

Photograph the place for a later referral and also for inclusion in the book.

  • Has the paint color of the house changed?
  • Have there been renovations?
  • Are there missing trees?

If you are going in your mind

Do the same:

  • Remember the feel of being there once.
  • Remember things that happened.
  • Remember the people who shared the setting with you.
  • Remember details of color, size, landscape, etc

While you will not be able to take an actual photograph, perhaps you have photographs from the past that will help you to remember the life that was lived in that setting at one point.

Whatever comes up placing on your memory list.

Action Step

Spend as much as you can today to write the setting of your story. Once the story is written in rough draft, place it in your memory binder.
